Ways to Color with Stampin' Up

There are so many different ways to add color with Stampin' Up. Arguably, stamping is wonderful alone, but adding in color and customizing the ways the images appear can be a truly rewarding part of crafting.

While Blender Pens deserve their own post, there are 5 main coloring tools discussed below:

Stampin' Blends Pens

Blends pens come in sets of two and include a light and dark color. These basically transition color and adjust the color to seem more realistic and 'shaded'/'ombre'. You just color and then color over the top! there is also a Stampin' Blends Color Lifter which can help 'remove'/lighten the color to create a gradient within one color as well!

  • Water Painters (Item # 151298)

Stampin' Up Classic Stampin' Pads +/- Water Painters

Ink pads are probably one of the easiest and simplest ways to add color...simply dab the stamp and press on the page! That said, you can elevate this by closing the pad, pushing lightly so that ink gets on the lid, then using your water painters with water or isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). Just dip the water painter into the ink that is on the lid, and move the color around! Easy peasy!

  • Water Painters (Item # 151298)

Stampin' Write Markers +/- Water Painters

Markers have many different methods. The first is to simply use them as a marker and fill in the outlines that you stamped like a coloring book. The second is to color directly onto the stamp using the markers and generate a multi-colored stamped image. The third is to color on a clear/acrylic block, then take your water painter, collect some color, and spread it around on the page as you deem fit!

Stampin' Up Watercolor Pencils +/- Water Painters

Water color pencils are fantastic! These can be used without water, but adding water only enhances their beauty. I use these by outlining the inside of a stamped image. Then I simply take a water painter (or a paint brush!), and draw the color from the outline to the center. the outside of the image will have more color concentration than the center if you use this method. As with all crafting, this can be adjusted based on your preference and method though. The sky's the limit!

Classic Stampin' Ink Refills + Water Painters

Simply drop a couple drops of ink into a container (or the same color stamp pad) and use water painters to collect and distribute the color!  You can also add some water or isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and a couple drop of ink refill to a spritzer. You can spritz your paper for a 'paint spatter' effect. If you move the spritzer closer or further away from your paper, you will find that the result and color saturation is different!

*Embossing*

Lastly, this is not necessarily a coloring tool, so much as a technique that can add dimension and color. You simply use a watermark pen or ink pad (Versamark) and stamp an image or draw a design. Next, you cover the image with embossing powder, shake/pour off the excess powder, then use your heat gun to 'melt' the powder. Embossing powders come in many colors, but also include white (great for snow!), metallic, AND clear (great for adding dimension to something that is already the color you are going for!)

  • Metallic Embossing Powder (Item # 109129 OR Item # 109131)
  • Embossing Pastes (Item # 141979 OR Item# 145645)
  • Stampin' Up Heat Tool (Item# 129053)
